Native Irish Trees – the Oak

Icon - Oak Tree - Dair

The most enigmatic of Irish trees is the Oak.

Known as Dair in Irish, from our local Edenderry to the mighty Derry up north, nothing says Ireland like the oak.

Once across Ireland in massive forests, few of them stand today. Yet still, this tree, this icon of Ireland is across Ireland, one of the best examples close to us here in Tullamore with the King Oak at Charleville Castle.

It is the tree of legends.

It is one of the trees whose names was used for letters in the old Irish ogham alphabet.
